Excursion «224. The shrines and cathedrals of eternal Jerusalem»

The Western Wall or the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem is the wall preserved after the destruction of the First and Second Temples of the Jews. The Arabs, who saw how the Jews grieve over the destruction of the temple, called this place the Wailing Wall. Currently, there is a tradition: when you standing at the front of  Wailing Wall you can  make the most secret dreams. You can also put a note between the stones of the Wall with a cherished desire, which will certainly come true. When you are planning to visit the Wailing Wall, it should be remembered that this is possible only in modest clothing that covers the knees and shoulders.

Church of the Holy Sepulcher (Church of the Resurrection) - the main shrine and place of pilgrimage for all Christians around the world.  It is the place of the convergence of the Holy Fire, were Jesus Christ was crucified,  buried and resurrected. 

Russian Orthodox Ascension Monastery stands on the Mount of Olives.
At the entrance to the Church of the Ascension, you can see the most important shrine of this place - the stone of the Virgin (it is believed that standing on it  Virgin watched the Ascension of the Lord).
Located in the monastery, the bell tower of John the Baptist (sixty-four meters in height) has an observation deck. Climbing up the many steps to the top of the bell tower, the gaze offers a breathtaking view of Jerusalem. This bell tower is the highest point of the Mount of Olives. Back in the twentieth century, archaeologists during excavations in the monastery discovered mosaics, various utensils, as well as a bust of Herod the Great. The monastery is interesting for tourists as a historical, religious and archaeological site.

 Mount of Olives is the highest mountain in the district of the city of Jerusalem. On the top of that mount located  observation deck, which very popular for city guests. Many excursions in Jerusalem begining  with a visit to this particular place.
From a height of almost 800-hundred meters, the gaze offers a magnificent view of Jerusalem and its attractions, as well as Mount Zion.
At the top of Mount of Olives is a Russian convent, on the territory of which stands the famous bell tower - it can be seen from almost anywhere in Jerusalem (the height of the building is sixty-four meters).
On the observation deck you can take pictures (the pictures are simply amazing), as well as explore the city in more detail with binoculars. Visiting  the observation deck on Mount of Olives will bring a lot of pleasure and leave unforgettable emotions.

Russian suburbs, Jerusalem

This neighborhood was built at the end of the XIX century. It was one of the first in the new part of the Israeli capital. It was founded at the command of the then Russian Emperor Alexander II.

The palace was a representation of the Russian Empire in the Holy Land. Russians on pilgrimage stayed here. For them built a hotel, a hospital, a cathedral dedicated to the Trinity. The consulate was also located here.

Today tourists - from all over the world, but especially, of course, from Russia - come here to admire the Holy Trinity Church. It is famous for its two icons - St. Nicholas the Wonderworker and the Annunciation.

Diplomatic traditions are also unchanged. The Consulate of the Russian Federation is still located here.

The Holy Trinity Cathedral is the main church of the Russian Theological Mission in Jerusalem and belongs to the Russian Orthodox Church.
The one-domed Holy Trinity Cathedral at the Russian Theological Mission was built in the center of the Russian suburbs at the expense of the people of the Russian Empire.
Holy Trinity Cathedral is a Neo-Byzantine style temple of pinkish cream stone with 10 green domes of Tula casting, which soon became a recognizable landmark of Jerusalem.
