In this tour, you will visit two ancient cities. One of them, Lod, is mentioned in the Bible and in an Egyptian inscription from the time of Thutmose III (15th century BCE!). Adjacent to Lod is Ramla, which has a more recent history, dating back to the 6th century when it was built by the future Caliph Abd al-Malik. But what does Harry Potter have to do with all this?

St. George's Church - an ancient temple dating back to 530 AD, with the relics of the great martyr and a stunning iconostasis. Khan el-Hilu - partially restored ruins of a caravanserai from the 14th century BCE. Arched Underground - an entire underground world of an ancient (7th century) water reservoir with its own ecosystem, also known as the Pool of St. Helena. Harry Potter's Tomb - not only the name of the famous English wizard but also the nickname of a young man who joined the war at the age of 16, claiming to be a year older. Moni Winery - a charming place, a wine lover's dream; here, wine is stored 12 meters underground in cellars dug by monks 120 years ago. Regina Palestina Catholic Monastery - also known as Dir Rafat. Another atmospheric place with a heavenly garden. Located near the winery.

Attractions

Church of Saint George

The temple in honor of the famous Roman warrior canonized by saints is located in the ancient part of the city of Lod - Gan-Shalom - on Golomb Street. Here he was born. St. George died at the beginning of the 4th century, during the reign of Emperor Diocletian, in Nicomedia. And after death he returned to his homeland - the followers of Christ's faith transferred his relics to Lod.

In the crypt named after St. George, there is a tomb, in which at one time his relics were placed, as well as a particle of the relics themselves and a chain that the warrior was chained to.

The Greek Patriarchate of the Jerusalem Orthodox Church administers the temple.

Pool of the Arches

The Arched Pool in Ramla

This is the only remaining memory that Israel has of the grand structures from the Abbasid era. At least, archaeologists haven't found anything else yet. The Arched Pool was built in Ramla towards the end of the 8th century as an underground water reservoir. This architectural monument is considered one of the earliest examples of the use of pointed arches.

Tourists who visit Ramla always make sure to stop by the pool. The city is primarily known for this feature. There is plenty to see. The structure has been well restored, and visitors can even take a boat ride on the reservoir itself.

White Mosque (Ramla)

The White Mosque is an ancient Umayyad mosque located in the city of Ramla, in the Central District of Israel. Only the 30-meter minaret remains from the mosque.

According to Islamic tradition, it is believed that the tomb of Nabi Salih, a revered saint of Palestine, is located in the northwest part of the White Mosque.

According to Muslim tradition, it is claimed that 40 companions of the Prophet Muhammad are buried in the White Mosque.

Deer Rafat Monastery (Regina Palestine)

The name is associated with the Arab village of Deir Rafat (Arabic - "ruins of a monastery"), which once existed nearby, in the place of which the village of Givat Shemesh is now located.

The land belonging to the village was acquired by the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem in 1855. In 1925, here, on the site of the ruins of a Byzantine church, the construction of a modern monastery began. In 1927, after a powerful earthquake and the completion of construction, the monastery church was consecrated as the church “Regina Palaestinae” - in the hope that the Virgin Mary will continue to guard the monastery.

At the entrance to the monastery there is a bronze statue of the Virgin Mary with a crown adorned with 12 gilded stars; even today it is a kind of symbol of this place.
