The Old City of Jerusalem is surrounded by high walls. Behind them, everyday life goes on, and in each of the four quarters that make up the Old City, there is trade, worship, and people going about their daily activities. We are about to visit one of the most interesting quarters - the Muslim Quarter, where there is much to see and admire not only for those devoted to Islam but also for ordinary tourists.

According to tradition, only faithful Muslims, or Muslims, are allowed to enter the interior of the mosque. However, the Muslim Quarter of Jerusalem has plenty of attractions for regular tourists as well. We will be able to see the beautiful architecture from the early days of Islam, embodied in the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock. These iconic structures have a complex history with numerous name changes and reconstructions, but they have not been able to erase the magnificent vision of the ancient architect.

The Temple Mount is the highest point in this quarter, offering an unforgettable panorama of the Mount of Olives and the entire Old City with its winding streets and the surrounding countryside stretching into the distance.

Attractions

Old town in Jerusalem

At this part of the city located  its main attractions are concentrated. In the Old City are the main shrines of three religions: Muslim, Jewish and Christian. There are also several quarters in which Jews, Arabs, Christians and Armenians live. Despite the fact that Armenians also are Christians, separate services are held for them in temples, and they live separately. In the Armenian quarter there are practically no tourist excursions. Everyone can see the stunning monuments of ancient architecture, just a walk through the Old Town. The Tower of David, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the preserved Roman shopping street, the Wailing Wall and many other sights of Jerusalem are open for tourists.

Nabi Dowd Mosque

Nabi Daud Mosque is located on the top of Mount Zion in Jerusalem. It is part of a large religious complex.
On the ground floor of the complex is the Tomb of King David (therefore, the mosque bears his name, Daud in translation - David). The sarcophagus is in a separate room and is a synagogue for the Jews. On the top floor - The Upper Room- the place is popular among Christian pilgrims.
The religious complex is surrounded by an arched covered colonnade and a minaret rises above it. In any room of the complex you can see the mihraba (a niche in the wall) of the XIV-XVI centuries, indicating to Muslims the direction of prayer to Mecca.

Temple Mount

Temple Mount

There are many versions about which of the biblical places the hill corresponds to. There are opinions that it is Mount Moriah; the threshing floor that David bought from Ornah the Jebusite to build an altar; and even that it is Zion, known from the Psalms and mentioned by the prophets.

This mountain is greatly honored by Muslims. It is home to the Haram al-Sharif and two mosques well known to followers of Islam around the world: Al-Aqsa and the Dome of the Rock. They stand on the site where the Temple of Jerusalem once stood.

Al-Aqsa Mosque

Al-Aqsa Mosque

The mosque, highly respected by Muslims, is located in the capital of Israel on the Temple Mount. According to Islamic beliefs, it was to this place in the city of al-Quds (as Muslims call Jerusalem) that the Prophet Muhammad moved (performed "isra") from Mecca. From here he also ascended to heaven ("miraj").

Dome of the Rock Mosque

Dome of the Rock Mosque

"Neighbor" of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, sharing with it the Temple Mount - Mount Moriah. The greatest architectural monument of the Umayyad period, it is also a sacred site for Muslims around the world.

The Dome of the Rock is a magnificent example of early Islamic architecture. The refined proportions of the building and the ornamentation of fine mosaics in the interior look simply luxurious.

Jerusalem

Jerusalem is not only the capital of modern Israel, but also a city which, for many centuries, has been the "center of the world" for Jews, Christians and Muslims.

No other city on the planet can  compare with it, because only Jerusalem has such a rich spiritual and historical attraction.
