Safed
Safed is not mentioned in the Bible. Its fame, located in the heart of Upper Galilee, came later and is associated with Kabbalah, a medieval spiritual teaching. Our excursion in Safed will take place at an altitude of 800 meters above sea level, where magnificent landscapes of Upper Galilee unfold from the majestic plateau.
Safed is considered one of the four main holy cities, the cradle of Jewish culture and spirituality. In ancient times, known as the Second Temple period, the city served as a stronghold for the Zealots and provided them shelter behind its fortress walls. During the Crusader and Mamluk periods, Safed served as an administrative center.
Katzrin
Our excursion continues in a town fragrant with flower aromas and astonishing with the cleanliness of its winding streets. In 1974, when the Yom Kippur War ended, the construction of the city of Katzrin began. The location was chosen near the ruins of a Jewish village dating back to the 5th century. We will take a walk through an open-air architectural park and see the ruins of a synagogue and some partially preserved ancient buildings.
Visit the Museum of Antiquities and the local cultural center, where all the artifacts found during excavations in the Golan Heights are accumulated. The local factory produces unique silver items and jewelry, and the taste of the famous Golan wines is known far beyond the country. Katzrin is a hub of ancient history and modern development in Israel, serving as the capital of the Golan Heights.
Golan Heights
In the northeast of Israel lies a basalt plateau covering an area of 1,150 square kilometers. These are the Golan Heights, where the next part of our excursion will take place.
The plateau formed millions of years ago due to volcanic activity, and as evidence of this, several volcanic peaks can be seen above it.
In history, the Golan Heights are known for being part of Solomon's kingdom in the 10th century BCE, and during the Second Temple period, Jews resettled in this territory after the Babylonian exile. The remains of synagogues built during the Mishnah and Talmudic eras serve as architectural evidence of past events. The legendary Jewish historian Josephus Flavius left detailed notes about the Golan Heights, as he was directly involved in fortification construction and later became the ruler of Galilee. Excavations on the heights have revealed 29 destroyed synagogues and 32 ancient Jewish settlement sites.
