Ramon Crater
The unique crater of erosional origin is one of the main natural landmarks of Israel and, perhaps, the most famous object of the Negev Desert. Ramon really looks fascinating: thanks to the crater, the landscape seems alien.
Mahtesh Ramon is one of the true wonders of nature. It is the largest crater in the world, created not by a meteorite fall, but as a result of intense erosion over several million years: the waters slowly but surely washed away the soil, exposing geological layers of different eras.
This is a rocky wall containing fossils of ammonites, marine creatures that lived millions of years ago in the sea that once covered the entire Negev region.
Ammonites derived their name from the ancient Egyptian deity Amun, who was depicted with twisted horns.
