A vast forest stretches in the triangle between the Hebron Hills and the Negev and Judean deserts. Its area exceeds 40 square kilometers. Here, you can find various types of trees, including conifers (Jerusalem pine and cypress), deciduous trees (oak), fruit trees (the forest is surrounded by cherry and peach orchards), as well as almond, olive, and palm trees – the full list would take up more than one line. There are over 4 million trees in total. The number is known because Yatir is a man-made forest that is replenished each year with new "residents."

The planting of this forest began in 1964. Today, Yatir is the largest artificial forest in Israel and one of the must-see places. The forest is perfectly suited for various recreational activities. People come here to take walks, engage in sports, gather mushrooms, admire the plants, and explore the ancient ruins. Within the Yatir area, you can find the ruins of the eponymous city and the ancient settlement of Anim.

During the trip, you will stroll through the forest, delve into its history and archaeology, and visit a cosmetics factory.

Mount Amsa

Located near the Yatir Forest is Kibbutz Har Amsa, where a mountain with an elevation of 859 meters is situated. There is an observation deck that offers breathtaking views of the surroundings. There is plenty to see, as this area is a nature reserve. The Arad Valley and Judean Desert are clearly visible from here. Perhaps Amsa is the best place to admire them.

Ancient Road

The road that stretches through these areas is very old, dating back to Roman times. It was built by the soldiers of the X Legion, which settled in Jerusalem for over 150 years after capturing the fortress of Masada. It is said that the legion's sappers were involved in its construction.

Hurvat Anim

This ancient city dates back to the times of David and Solomon. Today, you can see the remains of large-scale structures from different periods. There are ruins of a fortress and a village, numerous caves, a water reservoir, and an oil press. However, the most famous feature of this place is the remains of an ancient synagogue. It was discovered relatively recently, in 1987. Historians believe that the synagogue was built around the 4th century and served its purpose until the 7th or 8th century. After that, it was likely converted for use as a mosque.

Isway Kedem Cosmetics Factory

The name translates to "Ancient Herbs" or "Eastern Herbs" (the word "kedem" can be interpreted in different ways). This factory is located in the village of Carmel and specializes in producing natural cosmetics. The products are made from medicinal herbs that grow in the Judean Desert, specifically where it meets the Hebron Hills and Ein Gedi. Beauty products are made according to centuries-old traditions of local folk medicine.

The unique climate of this region allows plants typical of both the desert and the Mediterranean to coexist in one area. These plants contain many phytosterols, have a distinct aroma, and higher-than-average concentrations of essential oils.

During the factory tour, you will learn about ancient Jewish medicine, witness the cosmetics production process, and, of course, have the opportunity to purchase some products for yourself.

A trip to the Yatir Forest is an opportunity to combine several activities in one excursion. Breathe in the fresh air and escape the city noise in the embrace of nature, delve into history, and learn something new about the traditions and culture of Israel. It will be a fulfilling walk that you will remember for a long time. Perhaps one day you will want to experience it again!
