The journey to the western part of the island begins with a visit to the town of Camara de Lobos.
At one time, this town was the fishing center of the south of the island; in 1950, Sir Winston Churchill loved to sit above Camara Bay de Lobos in front of an easel and paint his paintings…
The entry of Portugal (and Madeira) into the European Union changed a lot on the island in general and in Camara de Lobos in particular, but this amazing, cozy town has retained its charm…
Next our path lies along the bed of the Ribeira Brava river through a beautiful gorge. This gorge divides the island into eastern and western parts. Along a picturesque road, with short stops at viewpoints, we will climb to the Enkumeada Pass.
We will definitely stop at theobservation platform of the pass, from where we can see the northern part of the island and the southern part of the gorge.
After a fifteen-minute stop we rise higher – to the tundra zone, on the plateauPul da Serra. Here, on the Plateau, at an altitude of 1500 meters, local farmers live, raising cows that graze freely among the heathers and tundra thorns.
We are driving along the “ridge” islands with fantastic mountain scenery and descend to the town of Porto Moniz, located on the northwestern tip of Madeira.
Port Moniz, the island's former whaling and fishing port, is famous for its natural ocean pools formed by volcanic lava.
In Port Moniz we will stop at1 – 1.5 hoursand you will have the opportunityto swim in the pools.
Then we will drive along the northern coast of the island with stops in beautiful bays, climb to a mountain village located in a small valley at an altitude of 450 meters, where, if desired, we can organize lunch in a local restaurant(local simple village cuisine - espetada (beef skewers on bay skewers), baked trout, local vegetables and bread, wine and other drinks). .
After lunch we will go to the town ofSan Vicente, a small, pretty town nestled behind a cliff, not far from the northern coast of the island . On the way back to Funchal we will climb to the highest cape in Europe –Cabo Girau (580 meters above the ocean).
In November 2012, a wonderful observation deck with a glass floor was opened here, from which You will see Funchal from a bird's eye view
At 17.00. – 17.30. we return to the hotel.
