Go for the whole day to a picturesque mountain region with ancient temples, fortresses and vineyards. Racha will reveal to you the world of authentic mountainous Georgia. Everything here has been preserved in approximately the same form as it was hundreds of years ago. You will see traditional villages with houses that seem to be stuck to the rocks. You will admire the picturesque Shaori reservoir, taste rare wines at the ancient Royal Khvanchkara factory and visit the capital of the region — small cozy town of Ambrolauri.
What awaits you:
Original Racha: We will show you all the most interesting places in the region. The excursion program includes:
Shaori Reservoir — an incredibly picturesque artificial lake formed after the construction of the Miratskali dam. You will appreciate it from the best angles and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere reigning here.
Nikortsminda Temple — Built in 1010-1014 during the reign of the first king of united Georgia, you will remember it for its stunning frescoes and carved decorations.
Ambrolauri — administrative center of the Racha-Lechkhumi region. We will visit the main square of the city, see the monument to Khvanchkara wine and the ancient stone tower of Machabeli.
Winery — you will learn how grapes were crushed in the old days and what techniques were used during the aging process. You will also get acquainted with the intricacies of modern production and taste vintage Usakhelauri wine, once popular among the princely class.
Tsesi village — we will examine the ancient Barakoni temple, above which rise the ruins of the 18th century Mindatsikhe fortress, and talk about the features of old Georgian domed architecture.
They — a city with a population of 3,000 people, the administrative center of Upper Racha, formerly the capital of all of Racha. The city is interesting for its synagogue, mountain views, local history museum and Rachin ham. The name of the city hides many mysteries. For example, the Jewish city of Oni in Egypt is known, where a copy of the Jerusalem Temple was located and which was destroyed at the end of the First Jewish War. It can be assumed that the Rachin Oni was built by Jews in honor of that “country of Onia” and its founder Onias.
