Excursion «Caesarea. Haifa. Zichron Yaakov»

Caesarea

The initiative to build the city is attributed to Herod the Great, who received this piece of land as a gift from the Roman Caesar Augustus, and in gratitude for the gift, he named the city Caesarea. The city was built with the expectation that its wealth would increase through the port and trade. The excursion will take place in those places that became accessible only recently, thanks to complex excavations that showed how and by what principles the ancient city was built, and what the residence of the Roman procurators was like. Among them, by the way, was Pontius Pilate, as evidenced by a slab discovered during excavations.

The city had everything that the Romans loved so much in their homeland: a hippodrome, a theater, baths, nymphions and other facilities for pastime and entertainment. Paying tribute to the metropolis, in Caesarea, in the likeness of Rome, there were wide streets, temple buildings, utility buildings, of which only magnificent mosaic floors remain.

Continuing excavations are revealing more and more new objects of the city: secret passages, the remains of watchtowers and fortress walls, everything that remained in Caesarea after the period when the city was ruled by the crusaders, who captured it in the 12th century.

Haifa

Our excursion goes to the slopes of Mount Carmel, where one of the most beautiful and cozy cities in the world is located – Haifa. The favorable Mediterranean climate and convenient location have always attracted increased attention to Haifa. During one of the heydays of urban culture, French monks settled in the city, built their monastery here and established a monastic order named after the mountain: Carmelite.

In addition to the Carmelites, this place was the refuge of other followers of the ancient religion, which is called Bahai. They built their own temple and laid out a luxurious Persian garden. The city has many places of worship of representatives of various religions, including several Christian churches, including Russian.

Zichron Yaakov

Transferring the route of our excursion to the southern slopes of Mount Carmel, we will find ourselves in a small town founded in 1882 as an agricultural settlement and named Zichron Yaakov. The first settlers of this area were immigrants from Romania, which to a certain extent predetermined the agricultural specialization. The town of Zichron Yaakov is famous for its winemaking. There is a special tourist route here called the Wine Road. Throughout the entire block, in the houses along the street there are numerous wine pubs, cellars and restaurants where you can try a wide variety of varieties and brands of wine.
