Prince's Islands
This is a truly magical place, a piece of heaven on Earth. Princes' Islands — these are 5 islands in the Sea of Marmara near Istanbul. Departing from the port of Istanbul on a motor ship, after an hour and a half of a boat trip you will find yourself on the largest island. Buyukada. Continue your journey on a chaise, as there is no transport on the islands other than horses, donkeys and bicycles.
The nature of the Princes' Islands is distinguished by its exceptional beauty.Surrounded by the azure sea, they are surrounded by greenery, surrounded by tall pine trees and lush gardens. The islands got their name during the Byzantine Empire, when they were a place of exile for disgraced nobility, including princes and princesses. These times are long ago passed, and the last exile here was Leon Trotsky who lived on the islands for 2 whole years, occupying a huge two-story mansion.
Today the islands have become a vacation spot for residents of Istanbul and its suburbs. The largest of them is the most popular. the island of Buyukada (translated as “big island”), whichthe Byzantines called Prinkipo. At the very top of the island there is a monastery, which can only be reached on foot.
