Old Town of Prague – This is the historical heart of the capital, imbued with a rich cultural and architectural heritage. First mentioned in 965, it was already a center of trade and crafts with stone buildings and chapels. In 1232, King Wenceslas I surrounded it with powerful walls, giving the city the appearance of a fortress. In the 14th century, Old Town Square became the heart of the city, and the famous Orloj astronomical clock appeared on the town hall tower. Main temple — Church of the Virgin Mary near Tyn – became the spiritual center of the city, and Ungelt served as a customs yard for foreign merchants. The Old Town is also famous for its many other shopping areas, including the Small and Bethlem Squares, as well as the Fruit and Coal Markets. It was here that one of the oldest universities in Europe was located, founded by Charles IV in the 14th century.
