The ancient Armenian city of Gyumri is located where the northern spurs of Mount Aragats smoothly merge with the Pambak and Shirak ranges. Historically, the date of its foundation goes back thousands of years. During the period of its existence, the city had to change its names several times and one of them – “Kumairi”, given to him by Xeophon, stuck for a long time. Over time, it turned intoGyumri. There is a special aura here and you can feel it everywhere. Armenians, and not only others, have always called Gyumri - “The city of craftsmen and special humor.” The jokes of the local wits were very popular and immediately spread throughout the country.
A famous landmark is the Black Fortress (Sev Gul Arm.). This is a unique military structure, built on the orders of Emperor Nicholas I, as the main outpost for holding Turkish troops during their attack. Notable is the “Hill of Glory” - a place where heroes killed in battle were buried. The Orthodox Church of Archstrategist Michael is also located there.
In the Center, next to the impressive City Hall, there are two special Churches. One of them – "Yot verk"(Seven Sufferings of the Mother of God), is shrouded in many legends and is unique in that it hosts services of three Christian denominations. Opposite it stands the Temple of“Christ the All-Savior”, restored after the devastating Spitak earthquake of 1988.
Arichvank – a monastery founded in the 7th century. Consists of two main churches and many attractions. Having a rich history, it is shrouded in many legends and various mysteries, which are still the subject of discussion among historians. The peculiar type of construction of the Church of St. Gregory, the unusual passages, and the “hermit’s chapel”, which was separated along with the rock, are truly impressive. The main church of the Virgin Mary, built in the 13th century, is particularly beautiful and elegant. Here once was the summer residence of the Catholicos (patriarch) of the AAC, and now there is a seminary. During the tour we will go around the highest peak of modern Armenia – Mount Aragats. Return to Yerevan.
