The majestic Karlštejn Castle began to be built on the orders of Charles IV in 1348 as a treasury for storing imperial coronation insignia; it occupies a completely exceptional position among Czech castles and fortresses. Many legends are associated with its history; it is a symbol of the golden times of the Czech lands. In addition to coronation insignia, it also housed royal treasures and collections of holy relics.
