Historians and archaeologists are still debating which is older: Prague Castle or Vysehrad? Legends connect Visegrad with Princess Libuše and Přemysl Orac, the first rulers of the royal Přemyslid dynasty. According to archaeological data, the fortress on the Visegrad Rock existed back in the 10th century. During the reign of Charles IV, Vysehrad acquired special spiritual significance, becoming a place where future Czech kings fasted and prayed before their coronation. Although the royal palace on Visegrad has not survived, powerful fortress walls, catacombs and underground passages are still visible. The oldest chapel in Prague, the 11th century Romanesque Chapel of St. Martin, is also located here.
